MY DEAR FRIEND, This case may require some small introduction. It was published in January 1893, in ‘The ‘Strand’ in the United Kingdom and in ‘Harper’s Weekly’ in the United States. The tale of its subsequent publication in later collected editions of my work is a tangled one, as my literary agent Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was uncertain about its suitability. He did however take a particular fancy to some of the paragraphs at the beginning of the tale and urged me adapt them for later revisions of my story ‘The Resident Patient’, which I sent to you in January.
